Famous Actress Emma Caulfield Discloses Her Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis!
Famous for portraying the role of Anya Jenkins in the television series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, Caulfield made this announcement in a candid interview with Vanity Fair. She also discussed the reasons that forced her to keep the news of her illness under wraps.
The actress said that she underwent an MRI in 2010 post experiencing a strange numbness on the left side of her face.
Caulfield recalled the incident when she received a missed call from the doctor’s office. On calling the doctor back, the actress got to know that she is having multiple sclerosis, also known as MS.
She added that on hearing, she couldn’t believe the news and the doctor suggested she could take a second opinion.
According to the actress, she was overwhelmed and felt pretty hysterical. Several thoughts were running through her mind such as what is happening and if she going to die.
The actress said that she preferred not to reveal the news of MS all these days as she feared that the industry might cite her illness as a reason for not hiring her.
She also pointed out the prevailing practice of denying opportunities for artists by citing some silly reasons.
According to her, some of these reasons range from an artist’s height, resemblance to someone else’s ex-girlfriend, eye color, etc. As per Caulfield, she was worried that if she talked about her disease, she would have to stop working.
The actress remarked that she was tired of not being honest. Even if the revelation adversely affected her ability to get work, she prefers to be vocal about the disease.
She mentioned that she came out in public about her illness now as she didn’t want to hide the news of MS from her 6-year-old daughter any longer.
Caulfield went on to add that it is her daughter who changed her perspective and anybody who is a parent would attest to that.
The actress shares the daughter with her husband Mark Leslie Ford. Caulfield’s late father also suffered from multiple sclerosis.
Caulfield clarified that she is not expecting special treatment from anybody in the industry after her announcement. The actress pleaded to stay away from making her a role model.
However, she went on to add that if discussing this topic could offer solace or encouragement to someone who is suffering from the illness, then that would be great.
Caulfield announced that she would be extending her support to MS Foundation and other groups that are doing research on multiple sclerosis.
The actress mentioned that currently, she is ok in her MS journey. On a positive note, she mentioned that she has to keep going.
