ANP secure thousands gathered at Ahmed Shah Massoud’s tomb

PANJSHIR, Afghanistan – Afghanistan’s national hero, Ahmed Shah Massoud, was remembered here yesterday by more than 4,000 Afghans. The crowd was joined by the First Vice President of Afghanistan and several parliamentarians, as well as, ambassadors from France, Germany, Canada and the International Security Assistance Force.

After paying homage at Massoud’s tomb in his home province, the thousands of attendees gathered to hear dignitaries speak of the late leader of the Northern Alliance.

Afghan parliamentarian, Sayed Mustafa Kasmi, remembered that Massoud thought being Afghan was more important than what tribe someone was from.

Throngs of observers were directed by Afghan National Police, who provided security for the event. Successful security included regulated traffic flow and seating.

Cheers and praises for Massoud and his fellow mujahideen, who fought against Taliban oppression and defeated Soviet occupation, were common during the speeches.

Massoud was murdered Sept. 9, 2001, by Al-Qaeda assassins two days before the terrorist attacks in America. Many analysts believe this was to eliminate a potential U.S. ally.

After the speeches and poetry, the crowds moved to different areas around the valley for lunch.
