(Photo by U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Bart Lomont, 3-19th Agribusiness Development Team)KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of Indiana’s 3-19th Agribusiness Development Team travelled to Camp Parsa Oct. 29 for a multi-day mission that included work on a demonstration farm as well as the construction of a drip irrigation system.

During the mission, ADT members also met with Afghan National Army Col. Abdul Salam, the Camp Parsa garrison commander.

Salam said he is very supportive of the demonstration farm and views it as a valuable training aid for all of western Khowst Province.

Camp Parsa is a training location for both the ANA and the Afghan National Police. The demonstration farm is housed within the camp and maintained by a local workforce. Prior to the installation of the drip irrigation system, an inefficient, primitive method of flood irrigation was in use.

U.S. Army National Guard Capt. Randy Cuyler, 3-19th ADT hydrologist and resident of Southbend, Ind., said he is confident “the introduction of a drip irrigation system should considerably increase grape yields while also reducing the amount of water wasted.”

The 3-19th ADT is made up of Soldiers and Airmen from the Indiana National Guard. These servicemembers are stationed at Forward Operating Base Salerno for a one-year assignment. This is the third rotation of Indiana Guardsmen to work toward strengthening the Afghan economy through agribusiness development.
