PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Eleven Afghan National Security Force soldiers with Task Force Reliance graduated an eight-week covert police training course at Forward Operating Base Gardez, April 7.
Law enforcement professionals, from 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Lethal, conducted the training, which included covert operations, surveillance, tactical operations, first aid, criminal investigation, interview and interrogation, and Global Positioning Systems .
“They are now a full time operational team that will be based out of FOB Gardez. They are made up of Afghan Uniform Police, Afghan Border Police and Afghan Civil Order Police,” said Barry Ralston, law enforcement professional for TF Lethal, from Amarillo, Texas. “We start with partnered, low-level operations to build their confidence until they are ready to operate on their own.”
According to Ralston, TF Reliance will be incorporated into operations conducted by coalition forces, the Afghan criminal investigation division, the Afghan counter narcotic units and the Afghan National Directorate of Security.
“They are designed to supplement those groups when it comes to surveillance, criminal investigation and taking action on targets,” said Ralston.
Ralston said there are not many units like TF Reliance operating in Afghanistan, and it is important to have them collecting evidence and building case files as the Afghan Rule of Law system becomes more strict.
“The training you have completed in the last eight weeks is very important to the future of Afghanistan,” said Paktya Deputy Gov. Abdul Rhaman Mangal, during his speech at the graduation ceremony.
U.S. Army Lt. Col. Stephen Boesen, TF Lethal commander, of Ankeny, Iowa, expressed his appreciation for the trainees and his expectations for the graduates.
“You are all a shining example of what Afghanistan has to offer,” said Boesen. “You have worked hard over the last few weeks and you are ready to take on your special role in protecting the people of Paktya. My request is that you get after the enemy, and stay strong and courageous in your duties.”
After receiving their training certificates, the graduates recited an oath and promise to uphold their duties as covert police officials. Each graduate held up their certificate and said they will serve for their country.
“We will try our best to bring peace to our society and to future generations,” said one of the graduates.
