U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Luis Tunake receives a surprise telephone call from President Barack Obama at Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan, Dec. 24. Tunake is from Denver, Colorado and he is currently serving with the Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team. Dallas Edwards, Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team Public Affairs)PAKTIKA PROVINCE,  Afghanistan (24 Dec. 09) – U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Luis Tunake received a surprise telephone call from President Barack Obama at Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan, Dec. 24.

“I was very surprised and excited when I got the call because this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to speak with our Nation’s president,” Tunake said.  “When we talked, he wished me a Merry Christmas and thanked me for serving in the United States Navy,” he continued.


This year, U.S. President Barack Obama, called ten deployed service members in order to wish them a happy holiday and thank them for their honorable service. Tunake was one of those ten.  Tunake is a hospital corpsman from Denver, Colo.  He is currently serving with the Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team.
