Student Loan Forgiveness: Official Application Is Live

OCTOBER 18 | MARK HEBREW

Apply for student loan forgiveness at studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application. This site is run by Ed (ED).

After a weekend beta test, borrowers had limited access to the application portal. You have until Dec. 31, 2023 to apply.

Vice President Joe Biden stated Monday, "This is a game-changer for millions of Americans."

The easy online form was released Tuesday for the press. Borrowers must provide their name, date of birth, SSN, phone number, and email address.

Borrowers won't need FSA IDs or to upload documentation. To stop fraud, borrowers must declare under penalty of perjury and jail that they're eligible.

Borrowers should get a confirmation email after applying. If more info is needed, ED emails the borrower.

If the application is approved and delivered to the loan servicer, the borrower will be notified.

The loan servicer will notify the borrower when debt relief has been implemented and if a new payment is due on any leftover loan balance.

Those that filled out and submitted the form over the weekend beta test need not apply again. More than 8 million applications were sent in.
